Tata Sons Big Decision: N Chandrasekaran Gets 5-Year Extension, IPO Preparations Begin

Major news has emerged from the Tata Sons board meeting. Tata Sons has approved the reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran as Executive Chairman. Last month, he had decided not to continue in the role—a decision that has now been reversed. Approval was granted to extend Chandrasekaran’s tenure by another five years during the board meeting held in Mumbai on Thursday.

Tata Sons’ clarification regarding the board meeting

According to a statement issued by Tata Sons, the process for Chandrasekaran’s reappointment had been underway since July 2025. The matter had stalled due to a lack of consensus. After Chandrasekaran expressed reluctance to continue as Chairman in August, the board requested him to reconsider his decision. He accepted this request during today’s board meeting.

Board Approves Tata Sons Listing (IPO)

According to sources, the board meeting also granted approval for the listing of Tata Sons on the stock market. This means Tata Sons can now begin preparations to launch an IPO. It is worth noting that last week, the banking regulator RBI rejected the company’s request to surrender its Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) registration, thereby reviving the possibility of the company listing on the stock market.

What Transpired at the Board Meeting?

During the meeting held on Thursday, board members voted in favor of appointing 63-year-old N. Chandrasekaran as Chairman for a third five-year term. According to board members, stability in the company’s leadership prior to the IPO would boost the confidence of potential investors. He changed his decision following a request from the Nomination and Remuneration Committee. The proposal to extend Chandrasekaran’s tenure on the board was passed by a majority vote.

Chandrasekaran had previously resigned

Chandrasekaran had decided to step down as Chairman last month. His current term runs until February 2027. Now, following the board’s new decision, he can continue in this role until February 2032. It is worth noting that Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987. Subsequently, he assumed the role of CEO of TCS in 2009 and became the Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017.
