RBI is now going to replace paper notes with plastic notes. You have been hearing and reading this news for many months, but when will these notes be available? No official information has been released yet. You might be wondering when you will be able to make purchases using plastic notes? It is expected that plastic or polymer notes will be introduced in the country very soon.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, while announcing the MPC results today, said that plastic notes are expected to be in circulation from the beginning of the next financial year. His statement is being interpreted to mean that polymer notes are likely to be available in the market between April and June 2027. During a press conference, the Reserve Bank Governor said that the scheme is currently under trial. The decision to implement it on a large scale will be based on the trial and its results.
When will plastic notes be available?
The central government has approved the RBI to print 2 billion polymer notes, in denominations of Rs 10 and Rs 20, as a field trial. At present, there is no plan to completely stop paper notes. Both polymer and paper notes will be available in the market. If everything goes according to plan, people will be able to make purchases with plastic notes from the beginning of the new financial year.
Plastic notes instead of paper?
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra gave two reasons behind the introduction of plastic notes. The first is to increase the durability of the notes. This government initiative will prove very useful for small notes (Rs 10 and Rs 20 notes). These notes are used frequently and deteriorate quickly due to rapid circulation. Polymer notes have been in use in many countries for over 30 years.
What is the lifespan of polymer notes?
The lifespan of polymer notes is two to four times longer than that of normal notes. Moreover, as the size of the country’s economy increases, the need for cash also increases. Before issuing these notes in large quantities, their performance in the Indian climate, environment and existing banking structure will be thoroughly tested.
