Planning a New Business? Big Changes Coming to GST Registration After Sept 12 Meeting

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is going to meet on the 12th of next month. It can consider various important proposals. The GST registration process can be simplified for businesses that pass tax credit of more than Rs 2.5 lakh per month.

The 57th meeting of the Council, to be chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, can also consider the automated cancellation of GST registration. Currently, the Central GST Commission and some state commissions are not following a single process while sanctioning GST registration of large businesses. This has created uncertainty among taxpayers.

It is worth noting that this meeting is being held after a gap of more than a year. The last time it was held on September 3 and 4 last year. At that time, the Center and the states revised the GST rates and tax slabs. The revised GST structure came into effect from September 22, 2025. Instead of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, a two-tier tax slab was implemented. A 40% slab was introduced for ultra-luxury goods.
