Marathi film ‘Gondhal’ has made an official entry from India for the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027). Abhay Sinha, chairman of Film Federation of India and Empire, gave this information on Friday. The film will represent India in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category at the Oscars. Produced by director, writer and filmmaker Satash Dabkhar, the film released in theaters on November 14. Earlier, Dabkhar won the ‘Silver Pick’ award as the best director for this film at the International Film Festival of India 2025.
After the film was nominated for an Oscar, Abhay Sinha congratulated the entire team of ‘Gondhal’. He said, “It is a matter of pride and glory not only for Marathi cinema, but for the entire Indian film world.” He expressed the hope that the film will successfully present Indian art and culture in the world arena. However, this year, a total of 33 films, including 14 Hindi films, were nominated for the Oscar race, out of which this Marathi film has won the race.
By the way, ‘Gondhal’ is a suspense-thriller film set in the rural backdrop of Maharashtra. It has a beautiful glimpse of the ancient folk art and religious tradition of Maharashtra called ‘Gondhaal’. The story revolves around the life of a married woman named Suman. The film stars Kishore Kadam, Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohoni, Nishad Bhoir and Anuj Lord in lead roles. The music of this film has been composed by Ilayaraja, the famous musician of the country.
