India’s fast-growing artificial intelligence data center industry is seeing a rapid increase in the demand for engineering professionals related to mechanical, electrical and other industries. There is ample opportunity for them in the industry. Once dominated by software professionals, this sector is now in demand for engineers who do not have to write code. As companies invest heavily in AI infrastructure, they are looking for professionals with experience in power systems, cooling technology and industrial engineering. They are being hired at high salaries. Jobs are being offered across the entire AI infrastructure ecosystem. Employers are seeing demand from co-location operators like Equinix, STT GDC India, Yotta, ControlS and NTT and hyperscalers like AWS, Google and Microsoft. Engineering and infrastructure companies like L&T, Tata Projects, Sinead Electric, Vertiv, Siemens, Honeywell and Johnson Controls are expanding their teams. Importantly, the AI revolution is not just driven by software and algorithms but is also powered by the physical infrastructure required to run large-scale computing operations. The rapid expansion of India’s data center sector has accelerated the recruitment process for these professionals. According to Avendus Capital, India’s operational data center capacity is expected to increase from 1.6 GW in 2025 to 5 GW by 2030. Construction of more than 3 GW of additional capacity is underway. This will require an investment of about $25 billion. Along with this, a large number of jobs will be provided. According to a report, many specific positions have been created for AI data centers. These are AI Infrastructure Architects, Liquid Cooling Specialists, Power Procurement Heads and Grid Resilience Managers etc. The salaries in these positions are hefty. The annual salary of AI Infrastructure Architects ranges from Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore. The salary of Greenfield Site Heads ranges up to Rs 1.8 crore. Similarly, the annual package of professionals in Sensitive Unit Heads and Specialist Cooling Teams starts from Rs 50 lakhs and goes up to more than Rs 1 crore.
Mid-career engineers with 7 to 12 years of experience are being paid a salary of Rs 15 to 30 lakhs per annum. The starting annual package of entry-level engineers working in cooling and critical units is Rs 5 to 8 lakhs. According to industry sources, there is a lot of hiring activity in cooling and thermal management. This is a key area for AI-powered data centers. Companies are hiring large numbers of data-center cooling engineers, critical facility engineers, commissioning engineers, and liquid cooling specialists.
