A special $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump has been issued to mark the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. The United States Mint (a government agency) began selling it at 12 noon on Wednesday. The price of one coin has been set at $2.44, or Rs 230. Packs of $25 and $100 coins have been issued for sale. The coins sold out within three hours of the sale. One side of the coin features Trump’s image. It also has the words ‘In God We Trust’ and ‘Liberty’. The other side has the President’s seal and the number ‘250’ for America’s 250th anniversary.
According to the United States Mint, a pack of 25 coins costs $61 and a pack of 100 coins costs $154.50. About half an hour after the sale began, the website sent people to a waiting area. With a waiting period of about an hour, a family was allowed to buy a maximum of two coins until 2 pm on Thursday.
The country has only issued a coin with a living president on it since 1926. That year, a half-dollar coin was issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and featured President Calvin Coolidge. Under U.S. law, the depiction of a living president or a living former president on a coin is prohibited. The reverse of a coin does not allow the depiction of a living person. Trump’s image is considered legitimate because it appears on the front of the coin.
