Most drivers have often felt that the steering wheel feels very light during heavy rain. It feels as if the car is floating on air or water instead of on the road. The grip of the tires on the road decreases. This condition is called hydroplaning. It feels as if the car’s tires are slipping. This is due to the water that is accumulated on the road. This is the most dangerous situation while driving. Hydroplaning does not only happen on highways or very bumpy roads, it can also happen at low speeds due to the condition of the tires and the water on the road. This feeling can occur even if the tires are very old or worn or have no pressure. This is hydroplaning.
Early rain is more dangerous
Hydroplaning occurs when a thin layer of water accumulates between the car’s tires and the road. Most people think that roads are the worst when it rains. But the truth is, cars are more likely to skid in the first few minutes after the rain starts. This is because oil, grease, dust and rubber particles that have accumulated on the road over a long period of time mix with the water to form a slippery surface. This is why even in light rain, cars can suddenly skid. There are some signs of hydroplaning. Such as the steering suddenly feeling very light, the engine noise suddenly increasing for no reason. It feels like the car is floating in water, the car does not change its direction when the steering wheel is turned, and it feels stationary when the brakes are applied.
What to do when hydroplaning
Most drivers are hesitant and suddenly apply the brakes or turn the steering wheel too fast, which can cause the vehicle to overturn or go out of control. Instead, there are a few things you can do to help control the situation. Here areā¦
- Slowly take your foot off the accelerator, allowing the vehicle to slow down naturally.
- Keep the steering wheel straight and do not turn suddenly. Twisted steering can throw the vehicle off balance when the tires are back on the road.
- Do not apply the brakes suddenly. This can cause the vehicle to skid.
- The ABS technique will only work when the tires have some contact with the road.
-As the vehicle slows down, the tires will come under control and the car becomes easier to handle.
How to reduce the problem?
-During monsoon or heavy rain, a little caution can be used to avoid hydroplaning.
-If the tires of the vehicle are worn out, replace them immediately.
-The pressure in the tires should be correct and not more than necessary.
-Reduce the speed of the vehicle during heavy rain.
-Avoid driving in water on the road as much as possible.
-Keep the headlights on for visibility during rain.
