TRAI Spam Call Rules: Strict Directives Issued To Telcos Against Spam Callers

According to a recent directive from TRAI, telecom companies like Jio, Airtel, and Vi are now required to take action against spam or harassing calls. If their AI-based caller ID system identifies a number as spam or fraudulent, the company must take immediate action, regardless of whether a customer has reported the number. This means that users will no longer need to report every single number to stop fraudulent calls; the companies’ AI systems will automatically identify and block such callers. KYC to be re-verified…

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued new regulations to curb spam and fraudulent calls, making it mandatory for telecom companies to re-verify the KYC of users who send spam. Violators will face immediate disconnection of their SIM cards, and in serious cases, companies will be required to lodge complaints with the police and law enforcement agencies. Information must be provided within two hours…

According to the notification, if a telecom operator’s AI or machine learning system identifies a call as suspected spam, the call details must be shared with the telecom operator from whose network the call originated. Furthermore, this information must be shared within two hours of the call being identified.

Originating Access Providers (OAPs) will be required to identify the caller’s unique KYC identifier within one working day of receiving the identification details and share that information with other telecom operators. All telecom operators must also check their systems within one working day to determine whether there are any other connections on their networks linked to the suspicious spammers active over the past 10 days. Action will be taken if more than five calls are made…

  • The notification states that if it is detected that a sender has made five or more such calls within a 10-day period, all relevant Originating Access Providers (OAPs) will take action against the sender.
  • For the first violation detected via the AI system, all telecom operators will suspend all telecom resources allocated to the sender—including outbound services—for a period of 15 days.
  • The notification further specifies that for subsequent violations, all access providers will disconnect the sender’s telecom resources—such as PRI/SIP trunks, SIM cards, etc.—for a period of one year. No SIM card for one year…

Telecom companies are required to blacklist spammers or fraudulent callers for a period of one year. During this time, no telecom company will issue them a new SIM card or connection. Although the fraudulent caller will retain the number, they will be unable to make calls to anyone; the number will remain active solely for making emergency calls. You can set up filters according to your requirements…

As per regulations, Truecaller or other caller ID apps cannot automatically tag calls originating from specific government-authorized number series—such as those starting with ‘160’—as spam or block them. These numbers are allocated for official and business communications. However, users retain the full right to manage calls on their phones and filter numbers based on their own preferences or needs.
