Madhya Pradesh government’s big move on Uniform Civil Code or UCC. The UCC draft being prepared by the government is almost in its final stage. The most talked about is the strict provisions on live-in relationships. Which has now become a topic of discussion across the country.
According to the new draft, it is mandatory to register a live-in relationship first. Apart from this, there will be a legal process like divorce to end the relationship. If a registered live-in partner wants to marry someone else, then the previous live-in registration will have to be cancelled first. On the other hand, if one wants to end the relationship unilaterally, then the other party can challenge it in the court.
What is the new rule?
For live-in registration, both the persons must be of legal age
Providing age certificate is mandatory
Registration will have to be done with the district registrar
If both get married after live-in, then the registration will be automatically cancelled
Strict provisions for married persons
The draft states that if any married person is found to be in a live-in relationship with someone else, strict legal action will be taken against them as per the existing law.
The Chief Minister’s Office and the Law Department have finalised the draft. After discussions with UCC Committee Chairperson Ranjana Prakash Desai, the government has started preparations to introduce the bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the Assembly. If the bill is passed in the Assembly and gets the President’s approval, the legal debate on the new provisions related to live-in relationships and inheritance may intensify further.
