Pokhran-II was a major scientific and strategic event in the history of India. The test was conducted in May 1998 in Pokhran, Rajasthan. India gave a clear message to the world that it has nuclear capability. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam played an important role in this mission. He was not only a scientist; He was one of the key figures in planning, coordination, security and privacy. During the mission, he earned the title of Major General Prithviraj. Sometimes it is also written that he was given the name Colonel Prithviraj.

Why was Major General Prithviraj named? Pokhran was a major requirement of the mission. It was necessary to conceal the identity of the scientist. Their movement to and from the test site in general would have raised suspicions among foreign agencies. So, scientists wore military uniforms. Many were given secret names. Dr. Kalam was named Major General Prithviraj. This name was symbolic. Prithviraj reminds us of Prithviraj Chauhan, a mighty warrior of Indian history. Prithvi was also the name of an Indian missile series, with which Dr. Kalam was deeply associated. Hiding their identity was not just a play; It was given such a name out of a security need. The scientists traveling to and from the test site looked like military officers. This confused outside observers.
